Shave and a Haircut

Got my hair cut today, way past due. Lots of gay bloggers are posting sexy barber pics lately.

Considering Farrah's infamous haircut and also Michael Jackson's "hair on fire" incident ("How about a little fire, Scarecrow?") it makes me wonder. The hair symbol goes all the way back to Genesis, when the angels/Watchers were attracted to the daughters of men, because of their... hair. And over the ages hair has certainly played a major mythic role, from Samson to Rapunzel. One story I find most interesting is of King David's beautiful but rebellious son, Absolom, known especially for his gorgeous hair. He probably had lots of fights with his dad about getting a hair cut.

Hair is a good Ego signifier - and it's interesting that in the army, the first thing that gets cut off is your hair. A bit of your ego probably goes with it.

For some reason, I keep thinking of Judge Doom from 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit?' He always called out his victims with a rhyme that no 'toon could resist: "Shave and a haircut".

Got my hair cut last week Michael. First time for three years or so. The lady took all the rat tails and burnt bits out (lighting cigs etc on the cooker), about 6 inches worth.

Not sure about the ego bit. Maybe worked in reverse for me, I was so lazy about it that it went feral and I was too embarassed to visit a hairdresser.

Anyhow, I had a wedding to attend, needs must.

cheers#

ps I shaved too

ps, them pics scary.

Elaine has a gay friend, she goes out with him quite a lot, but not so much now we have the boy.

She tells me some stories about it all, dark rooms etc.

cheers

I've had two memorable haircuts in my life. The first was a weird subconscious ritual head shaving that I put myself through after a huge fight with my first boyfriend. The second was in 2003, when my younger brother died and it was time for the funeral, and my hair was then down to my shoulders (first time I'd ever managed to grow it that long) and it drove my dad crazy, so I cut it off, because I figured he had enough to deal with right then. A haircut for a wedding is a much happier reason.

Yea, the b&w one is kinda. They're called "back rooms", and yes, they are dark. I had never been inside one before a trip to Europe, Seattle is pretty provincial that way.

Interesting, Michael, the hair issue. I still wonder why one sees all these Buddhist monks with shaven heads & then, too, it is de rigeur for new recruits in the armed forces. Then there're the fetish sites, here & here & here, filled with diehards & poseurs alike.

Me? Had a shaved pate in '87. Dreads in '91. Nearly every colour from the 70s to the 90s. Meandered through every coiffure & corporate cut my various jobs demanded. Now I'm longhaired & bearded. Met my guy here. Couldn't've been in a more committed relationship.

Have a spectacular weekend,
