The Beast in the Mirror

He also forced everyone, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on his right hand or on his forehead, so that no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of his name.

This calls for wisdom. If anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is man's number. His number is 666. --Revelation 13:16-18
The taxman cometh, and guess what? My tax liability came to $666.00!! WTF? Being your basic pinko anarchist fag I have a lot of personal anxiety about the IRS, and I admit I have sort of built the IRS up into a “beast”. It almost seems as if reality twisted itself around to present me with a symbol of my own fear and loathing.

BOO!!

I’ve been watching (from a discrete distance) these Tea Partyers, who think Obama is ruining the country so it can be handed over to the folks at New World Order Inc. and soon there will be foreign troops on U.S. soil, closing all the churches! I’m like “Hellooooo, where the hell have you BEEN for the past eight years!” I recall that eight years ago I was accusing GWB of the same shit, building him up into some kind of antichrist figure. I get some guilty pleasure from seeing the Right going through the same thing with Obama. It doesn’t matter what he actually does, the Right will always interpret every move as an act of devilish cunning.

God, maybe I really DO create my own reality, or if not create it... mold it. Is my experience of “reality” really a sort of mirror, a reflection of my own subconscious fears and desires? Like a genie who never gives me what I really want. Except maybe it does, on a certain level - the tricky fucker. That sounds a lot like “The Secret” doesn’t it? Uh oh, stop me before I go on Oprah!

I always thought the insistence by the Right that Obama - president of the Harvard Law Review and one of the most articulate men in American politics - was a teleprompter reading dupe manufactured by spin-doctors was nothing more than projection. They falsely said Obama was what Dubya actually was!

I sincerely hope that history won't try to redeem George W. Bush as a victim of the press or something like that, the way some tried to do with Nixon. I love one wonderful recent quote by Bob Woodward about historians that try to "redeem" Nixon: "We cannot forget that for a brief time in American history, a criminal was president of the United States."

My favorite bit by George W. Bush was where that jeering ape said classlessly to the press right in front of his poor science advisors (WORST JOB EVER), that "They may have PhDs and I'm a C student, but at the end of the day, I'm the president and they're my advisors."

I went through the rest of that day imagining how I could lift my knee in just the right way to get that guy's groin if he tried that on me...

They say the reason Bush was popular with "the base" was because he presented himself as uneducated, "one of us". (hardly the case, when his record is examined). And now we have an intelligent President, someone of relatively modest means, and well spoken. No wonder we hate him. He represents all the reasons we are not less than supreme. Perhaps Bush was a more perfect representation of the American soul, someone who bought and bribed his way to the top. He really was "one of us".

"We cannot forget that for a brief time in American history, a criminal was president of the United States."

The only thing wrong with that statement is "for a brief time".

I hear you. I hate anti-intellectualism enough to have devoted a whole blog to it (why, yes, it is Daughter of Hypatia, thanks for asking! :-) )

I am nowhere near as cynical of American society as all that, and I don't subscribe to your interpretation of these events.

George W. Bush was a fluke of history elevated to cult of personality by an unprecedented event (9-11), not an expression of our inmost selves. He campaigned (dishonestly) in 2000 as a Clinton-style centrist, and barely squeaked out a victory. The sole reason he was able to win re-election was the weakness of his opponent and the generally insane revenge momentum that affected us as collectively as it did.

EVEN WITH THAT, Bush won by the lowest margin in American election history in 2004, and he began a slow slide into unpopularity and irrelevance a year later.

Compare that to Barry, who won with an astonishingly huge landslide, especially considering what a strong candidate McCain was: he would have won any other year against any other opponent.

Last week's find of a clique of friends going by the appellation of Day Job Orchestra's overdub featuring Dubya on YouTube, here. My favourite spoken paragraph? Why, thissun, of course, "Seriously, I'm just one who likes a good war that'll hopefully go on forever. Folks, you have no choice but to believe. You know why? Well, it's because my Daddy is more powerful. One, two, three, four. Trumpet elf." Buffoonery, the downfall of an empire. Oh, the humanity! ~ (•8-D

I promised myself that I would only troll blogs today and not comment because I was pressed for time--but I couldn't resist when I saw your tax bill! Son, you'd better repent! It's a sign!

And I agree with you on the Tea Partyers. I've wondered the same things. But I don't know if we so much actually create our reality (*poof* I'm married to Bradley Cooper!) as the world is what we think it is: a world of doom and gloom or a world of possibilities.

Very cool Michael -indeed pay intention to the dreaming mind!!!!!
the number 666 appears in two different "official" documents -government ones - for me - one can be used for ID and one was for - ahem uhh "food subidies" for Dev haha
of course it is not the only number in these number sequences - but i thought it strange that it appeared like a glaring something on two totally unrelated official docs - in sequence embedded in a series of other numbers -
comments were great as always - also all the best in the world to you and Varen my friend!!!!!!!!
