When Arrows Meet

Mayor Pete
It turns out that presidential candidate “Mayor Pete” is Maltese/American:

“I’m definitely the only left-handed Maltese-American-Episcopalian-gay-millennial-war veteran in the race, but I think profile is just what gets you that first look.”
-Pete Buttigieg

Let me tell you about my Malta syncs:

Perhaps the most famous is The Maltese Falcon,  starring Humphrey Bogart. Filmed in 1941 it curiously played a part in the end of WWII, because the nuke that leveled Hiroshima was named after a character in the film - a gay character it turns out - the ‘Little Boy’. And the second nuke to bomb Japan was nicknamed ‘Fat Man’, again, after a gay character from the film. Of course, the seedy male hustler aspect in the original novel by Dashiell Hammett was played down in Hollywood, back in the day.

Malta lines up nicely with the Templars and the Holy Grail mythos, since the Knights of Malta were the last order to remain in business after the purge of 10/13. Grand Master Jean de Valette, “built a new fortified city on the Sciberras Peninsula to fortify the Order's position in Malta and bind the Knights to the island”. The city took his name and was called La Valletta.

I wonder if Pete hews from the aboriginal Maltese islander or from the later noble class of knights? I’d guess the latter.

Meanwhile, I noticed a repeating theme in books that I had rented on Kindle over the past year: they were set in Malta. I hadn’t searched the contents for Malta so it was just odd how that little island kept pushing itself into my consciousness.

Napoleon captured the island in 1798 and expelled the order. All three of my Kindle books referenced this historical event.

The sign of the Maltese cross: four arrowheads pointing towards the center.

Now that I have access once again to the seasonal collection of James Bond movies on Amazon, I watched how a Maltese flagged spy ship from Valletta is sunk in the opening act of For Your Eyes Only.

Last night I saw probably my favorite Bond film: Thunderball, and noticed that it ends with James inflating a red rescue blimp printed with ‘WHEN ARROWS MEET’.

It doesn’t take a huge amount of imagination to assume that an “arrow” represents the masculine organ and well, there is that gay theme again.

Bury your shafts, lads

The Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain, is a fountain surmounted by a winged statue of Anteros, located in Piccadilly Circus in London, England.

In Greek mythology, Anteros (Ancient Greek: Ἀντέρως Antérōs) was the god of requited love, literally "love returned" or "counter-love" and also the punisher of those who scorn love and the advances of others, or the avenger of unrequited love.[citation needed] He is one of the Erotes.

Both Eros and Anteros sport arrows. Just what DOES happen when arrows meet?

NOTES:

The Maltese Falcon naturally connects synchromystically to Horus the falcon-headed god, and to the Millennium Falcon, captained by ‘space pirate’ Han Solo.

“Shaftesbury” is nearly as comical at Buttigieg in the homo name game.
