A Sirius Fourth of July

The primordial source of all our religions lies with the ancestors of the Dogon tribe, who got their cosmogony and cosmology directly from the three-eyed invaders who visited long ago. The three-eyed invaders are mute and deaf and telepathic, could not breathe our atmosphere, had the elongated misshapen skull of Ikhnaton, and emanated from a planet in the star system Sirius. Although they had no hands, but had, instead, pincer claws such as a crab has, they were great builders. They covertly influence our history toward a fruitful end. ~P.K. Dick
Continuing on our little "Starship and the Canoe" quest, my mom made up this fabulous Fourth of July centerpiece this year. I'll call it the Dogon Solar Sirius Celebration.

The Starship and the Canoe

Kon-Tiki is a 2012 Norwegian historical drama film directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg about the 1947 Kon-Tiki expedition. The role of Thor Heyerdahl is played by Pål Sverre Valheim Hagen. It was the highest-grossing film of 2012 in Norway.

I loved it. I mean, six muscular, tanned, half-naked Norwegians on a raft, drifting in an equatorial current towards Polynesia... what's not to like? Abercrombie and Fitch meets Jacques Cousteau. But that's not what I'm writing about today. I'm writing about the idea that the 2012 film, and the original 1947 expedition, were thinly veiled ancient astronaut theory. What does a primitive balsa raft drifting from South America to Polynesia have to with space travel? Well, maybe everything.

The Solar God

Let's begin with Thor Heyerdahl, the leader of the expedition. Thor is a hammer-wielding god associated with thunder, lightning, storms, oak trees, strength, the protection of mankind, and also hallowing, healing and fertility.

Thor Heyerdahl named his expedition Kon-Tiki, after a supposed Inca Sun God. He hand paints an image of his solar deity on the sail - note the beard. The beard is odd since it represents the deity of a people who grew no beards, but then you get into the meat of the matter, because Thor's Tiki God is actually a "white man". Let us not forget the solar symbols painted onto the sails of the Santa Maria, another vessel that crossed from east to west with the sun, and discovered the "New World".
Heyerdahl claimed that in Incan legend there was a sun-god named Con-Tici Viracocha who was the supreme head of the mythical fair-skinned people in Peru. The original name for Viracocha was Kon-Tiki or Illa-Tiki, which means Sun-Tiki or Fire-Tiki. Kon-Tiki was high priest and sun-king of these legendary "white men" who left enormous ruins on the shores of Lake Titicaca. The legend continues with the mysterious bearded white men being attacked by a chief named Cari who came from the Coquimbo Valley. They had a battle on an island in Lake Titicaca, and the fair race was massacred. However, Kon-Tiki and his closest companions managed to escape and later arrived on the Pacific coast. The legend ends with Kon-Tiki and his companions disappearing westward out to sea.
There is a magical scene in Kon-Tiki where the camera starts with the voyagers on the raft, arranged in a 6 pointed star, and then zooms out to the Pacific ocean, and then to outer space where we see the stars and the curve of the earth, the moon, and then back again. It's never said outright, but you certainly get the the symbolism of ocean=space, and island=planet.
"The ancients saw the ocean not as a barrier, but a road." ~Heyerdahl
The thing about Thor is that his theory of Inca migration to Polynesia is still highly controversial. The well-considered and scientific theory is that Oceania was populated from the west. It almost seems as if he were looking for a good Sun God story, and he invented an eastern Pacific migration theory to support it.

In Kon-Tiki, Heyerdahl is constantly telling his fellow sailors to "Have faith in Tiki" and finally the engineer calls him on it: "Thor, this isn't a religion". But obviously, it is - the oldest Cargo Cult on earth.

Route 101

The Kon-Tiki Expedition lasted 101 days, a highly charged number at Gosporn.

101 in her many guises

101 represents the Divine Feminine, or Shekinah, in graphic form - The "0" is she, guarded by twin masculine pillars. We see this representation over and over again in Masonic architecture and symbolism. I was intrigued, because the 101 represents not only atomic bombs, but also stargates, time travel and warp speed.

The Dogon

But this is where it gets strange, when the film creates a crab "stowaway" character. Thor finds the crab hiding between the balsa logs at the start of the voyage, and he welcomes it along for the ride. All through the voyage, Thor is checking on the well-being of the crab, and at the end of the voyage, the raft wrecked on the outer reef of Raroia atoll in the Tuamotu group, the crab jumps safely ashore.

Coincidentally, I've also been reading VALIS, by Philip K. Dick:

In VALIS, Phillip K. Dick claims that Horselover Fat (his alter ego) experienced DNA memories of his ancestors voyaging from another star. That star was Sirius, which is also the brightest star in the earth's heavens, and also, the one most revered by Masonry.
~P.K. Dick
A curious sync is that the traditional Polynesian sail is called a "crab claw", by its characteristic shape. The shape makes little aerodynamic sense, but all kinds of religious sense. If crab clawed aliens really did visit this island earth in chariots of the gods, we might find evidence in our unconscious repetition of certain symbols.

Grail Racing - Conclusion

Horizon Job

The 33rd America’s Cup is now history. The first race was last Wednesday in Valencia, which had the Horus resonating BMW Oracle trimaran doing a “horizon job” on Swiss defender Alinghi. On Sunday, Feb 14, (Valentine’s Day) BMWO again crossed the finish line first, winning the best of three series, and bringing the cup to San Francisco, home of the Golden Gate Yacht Club. Coincidentally, the Solar Seminar featured this tidbit about Horus, also on Wednesday:
"Rising sun" of course, is Horus in the ancient Egyptian pantheon of gods. "Horus in the HORIZON“ or more literally "Horus-rising," is symbolic of the transformation between the dimensions of life and death. --Christopher Knowles
I’ve done my best to document the semiotics connected to this event, which have exceeded even my highest expectations. We’ve seen the Italian/Swiss defender, billionaire Ernesto Bertarelli take on symbols of the Catholic church - a defender of the faith - and the status quo. But most startling were the multitude of Horus/Shiva signifiers found in the Challenger, check out the previous Grail Racing entries for the gamut.

According to the elaborate Egyptian myth, Osiris was murdered by his jealous brother, Set (sunset?) who hacked his body up into 14 pieces and threw them in different directions, to be eaten by the crocodiles.
The goddess Isis searched and searched, accompanied by seven scorpions who assisted and protected her. Each time she found new pieces she rejoined them to re-form his body. But Isis could only recover thirteen of the pieces. The fourteenth, his penis, had been swallowed by a crab, so she fashioned one from gold and wax. Then inventing the rites of embalming, and speaking some words of magic, Isis brought her husband back to life.
Magically, Isis then conceived a child with Osiris, and gave birth to Horus, who later became the Sun God. Assured that having the infant would now relieve Isis' grief, Osiris was free to descend to become the King of the Underworld, ruling over the dead and the sleeping.
I consider this to be a well embroidered tale of the “splitting” of archetypes (gods/angels) out of the primordial consciousness. And of their “re-assembly“ into a cohesive whole - the ”Body of Christ“, so to speak. Isis is collecting the archetypes, and finding a place for them in the collective consciousness. She was able to find all but one... the phallus. Fascinating that the ”hard wing“ of BMWO vs. the ”soft sail“ of Alinghi instantly became the ”school boy“ joke at sailing websites. The black trident became a phallic weapon.

Racing was delayed for many days due to the Alinghi team’s insistence on sub 15 knot weather, but even that proved to be no shield against the mighty wing of BMWO, which sailed higher and faster even in conditions designed to favor the defender at every turn. As it turns out, the delay to Feb. 14 was semiotically fortuitous, because 14 is a symbol of completion, the final assembly of the Body of Osiris/Christ.

Feb. 14, as already noted, is the feast day of St. Valentine, the Catholic version of Eros. Eros is the ”Patron Saint“ of homosexuals, and now the Cup resides in San Francisco, the one city on earth that most resonates homosexuality. Star Fleet headquarters, BTW.

It makes me wonder. Is Eros the missing archetype? The Prodigal Son? The phallus of Osiris, and the risen Son/Sun.

Below are some pics of the trident yacht that struck a chord:

Pouring the Foundation

"The Deck" was finally completely demolished last weekend. The carpenter, wearing a blue "Sea Dru Nar" tank top and W (trident) emblazoned sneakers worked his ass off in the heat, but he got the the job done. He also poured the foundation for the supports for the new deck, and a fine job he did. Concrete is actually made from limestone - AKA recycled shellfish.

So pretty cool to find some concrete/crustacean synchs this week, starting with Anadae's link in the comments to the sub-lime DJ Lobsterdust!

Today Gods Amongst Men posted a Twins Redux featuring those Russian hotties Konstantin and Oleg - cavorting amongst the concrete ruins.

And also today, Bring a Trailer features a 1968 Fiat (King) Abarth 1300 - "perfected". Which is really no big deal, even considering the red and white paint job and the wink at Lucky 13. But check out the Abarth badge:

The Star of the Sea

Var and I spent the weekend (Eros Day) out at the beach cabin on Hood Canal. No internet, no TV. Really great. We had some wonderfully clear nights - Venus was stunningly bright while Orion was stunningly obvious.

We decided to make a day trip up to Port Townsend, so we passed the Trident (Shiva the Destroyer) submarine base in Bremerton on our way north. Once there, we decided to drive around a bit and get a feeling for the place, and we came upon an amazing temple: a Catholic Church called St. Mary Star of the Sea! I've never seen Mary officially referred to in such deliberately maritime fashion, though it makes sense, Port Townsend's seafaring heritage runs deep.

UPDATE: Todd Campbell reminds me through his excellent post: "I Can't Get it Out of My Head": The Maritime Signals Revisited, that 'Stella Maris' and 'Star of the Sea' are in common usage for maritime churches.

The Star of the Sea

We walked some docks, looking at boats, and I spied a trimaran (trident spear) so I wandered down to take a better look. This boat was a Corsair brand (which leads us to tales of France and Piracy that I must take up at a later date), but what caught my eye were the tourists on the dock - Destroyer's dock.

They were pointing out the underwater fauna to their kids, which happened to be giant Sea Stars. In the Pacific NW, sea stars come in the common five limbed variety, but also as giant, orange and purple hued monsters with dozens of tentacles! They are called Sunflower Sea Stars, natch.

Sea stars eat crab. In fact, they are the sworn enemy of crabbers. I've seen crabbers take sea stars and cut them up into pieces in order to help remove the threat from their prized fisheries, but I think sea stars always grow back their legs.

The crab represents the Catholic Church (see You're Invited to an Exclusive Preview Night), while the Sea Star represents Mary. Synch logic dictates: Mary will devour the church!? Perhaps she never got over Paul defiling her temple in Ephesus - hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. How clever of The Queen of Heaven to 'shyly' make her way into the church as the servant of Christ.

Curiously, the Sunflower Sea Star is eaten by the King Crab.

In the Shadow of Giants

And I stood upon the sand of the sea... --Rev 13:1

This is the most ancient hand drawn porn from the 'sacred' archives. I was 19, a freshman at school. He's a muscular blonde with the Big Fella hanging out at the beach. My bronze god.

Driving back to Kirkland from Hood Canal (and a nice dinner of steamed clams) after the fourth, I crossed over the Narrows Bridge (twin bridges), which was the beginning of last year's Double H Ranch synch. I decided to get off the highway after 'crossing over' from the Olympic (hah!) Peninsula to Tacoma to find a viewpoint from which to ponder this remarkable construct. Unfortunately, no easy turnoff was to be had, and I found myself on the road to Pt. Defiance Park, which I hadn't visited since college, so I decided to continue on. The park includes a marina down at the shore, and I drove down to have lunch and stretch my legs. I walked and walked, down the rows of yachts, until I found a large sailing catamaran tied to an end pier - the Helios.

Helios is the God of the sun, the Greek equivalent of the Egyptian Ra. Helios was the God worshipped in the island kingdom of Rhodes, which built an enormous bronze monument to him in 292 BC after being saved from a Greek invasion - the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. The giant stood 33m tall, lifted a torch in the air, and was crowned with the rays of the sun.
To you, o Sun, the people of Dorian Rhodes set up this bronze statue reaching to Olympus, when they had pacified the waves of war and crowned their city with the spoils taken from the enemy. Not only over the seas but also on land did they kindle the lovely torch of freedom and independence. For to the descendants of Herakles belongs dominion over sea and land.

The similarity to the Colossus of Manhattan is obvious, especially to her modern makers, who strove to echo the giant in Rhodes, though veiling him/her in Isis drag. Seeing the Colossus unveiled, I see two pillars (and a third), the mighty legs of Helios planted in the sea, which reminds me of the Narrows Bridge, and the mighty H.
Herakles has some pillars of his own: the Pillars of Hercules in Gibraltar, source of many a synch over the past year, most revolving around the lost Madeleine.

The Pillars of Hercules was the phrase that was applied in Antiquity to the promontories that flank the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar. The northern Pillar is the Rock of Gibraltar. A corresponding North African peak not being predominant, the identity of the southern Pillar has been disputed through history, with the two most likely candidates being Monte Hacho in Ceuta and Jebel Musa in Morocco.

"the pillars which Pindar calls the 'gates of Gades' when he asserts that they are the farthermost limits reached by Heracles." According to Plato's account, the lost realm of Atlantis was situated beyond the Pillars of Hercules.
The pillars as portals (stargates), to Atlantis, the Golden Age. Legend has Hercules and Atlas as rulers of Atlantis, from which I infer that the southern pillar represents Atlas. Two pair of pillars/legs standing in the sea - the double H.

In my lifetime, I've spent most of my vacation money pursuing the sun on some sandy tropical beach, as do millions. Seems to be instinctual for humans to haul ourselves out on the shore like a sunning seal colony.

The Gibraltar promontory is made of limestone, which is made of calcite crystals - the exoskeletons of countless hard shell marine organisms, ground into chalk. It seems that the legs of Hercules are made of seafood! Which brings me around to another mythical creature, Melusine, the siren, or bifurcated mermaid - the Merovingian Maiden. Thanks to Anadae for the reference.

Melusine agreed to become the wife of a mortal, which the bifurcated tail implies, thus circumventing "the mermaid problem". 'The Little Mermaid' is the Disney version of the Melusine tail, and given my love of fish and chips, the archetype seems to runs deep.
Hood Canal was famous for its Dungeness crabs before it became the Dead Sea, and my mother adopted the crab as her symbol of the beach, she has at least six crab glyphs at the cabin. The bounty was astounding (only male crabs are taken). Crabs resonate the octagon, and here is Cancer, from the ceiling of that old Mythraic cave - Grand Central Station.

Starbucks Coffee of Seattle is the current Melusine standard bearer, and Cancer like, it has slowly grown itself into every city of the world. I ponder why Melusine and "shade grown" coffee are now indelibly intertwined.

Back to the catamaran named Helios: a catamaran is a twin hulled vessel, planting two "legs" in the sea, powered by the sun (wind, the result of solar warmth).
Reminding me of our modern Atlas/Hercules - powered by the sun.

And this is where it gets kind of weird, because I was doing a bit of hotel research today, looking up where I had stayed in Santa Margherita, Italy, way back in the day as a designer visiting the Genoa Boat Show. Margherita means daisy, a heliotropic flower and near perfect glyph for the sun. I won't go down the daisy synch chain today, but it looks to be highly promising.

The list of hotels in Santa Margherita includes the Hotel Helios - HH. Aferrismoon has another hotel sync today.

Kirkland (Sunnydale North) is having a little festival this weekend - "Kirkland Uncorked" - a snooty wine tasting event, AKA a Bacchanal. It's an open air festival on the beach, and what should be tied to the end pier, but a big Sunseeker yacht.
