God Dam that Mad Dog

I've been thinking a lot about our strange signs in the sky, the strange rituals below. See Goro Adachi and Alan Green for more on all that. It's all about this enigmatic goddess standing in the river. She seems to be the key to the riddle.

I, ISIS, AM ALL THAT HAS BEEN, THAT IS OR SHALL BE,
NO MORTAL MAN HATH EVER ME UNVEILED.

Alan Green has been doing some excellent sync detective work at The Happy Creatures, and his latest post - Great Gig in the Sky Part 4 - blew me away because in  the 1988 X-Men Age of Apocalypse, Isis is being revealed as Apocalypse:

What makes this all the more intriguing is that the Statue of Liberty is well known to be a stand-in for Isis, but the Apocalypse character, back in a 1988 comic, revealed himself as Set, Osiris' brother and slayer!
The word "Apocalypse" means "lifting the veil" so putting Apocalypse in the place of Liberty/Isis is literally an "Isis Unveiled"! ~Alan Green
Something became very clear to me today, after pondering the death of porn star Erik Rhodes, who is resonating the Colossus of Rhodes - Helios - the inspiration for the Statue of Liberty.

Lettuce Pray
"According to Papyrus Chester-Beatty I, Set is depicted as trying to prove his dominance by seducing Horus and then having intercourse with him."
Set is Queer?
"However, Horus places his hand between his thighs and catches Set's semen, then subsequently throws it in the river, so that he may not be said to have been inseminated by Set. Horus then deliberately spreads his own semen on some lettuce, which was Set's favorite food."
Full stop. "Lettuce" is Egyptian symbolism for the phallus, due, not so much to the phallic shape, but from the milky white sap of the stalk. Set's "favorite food" IS semen. Is this story a little too gay?

He don't eat meat but he sure likes the bone.
"After Set had eaten the lettuce, they went to the gods to try to settle the argument over the rule of Egypt. The gods first listened to Set's claim of dominance over Horus, and call his semen forth, but it answered from the river, invalidating his claim. Then, the gods listened to Horus' claim of having dominated Set, and call his semen forth, and it answered from inside Set."
  • Erik was a very angry young man, and Set was extremely angry with Horus - a "mad" dog.
  • Set castrated his father, Erik chose to undertake an adult circumcision - which he said "was a mistake".
  • Set cut Osiris into 14 parts, Erik died on the 14th.
  • Set and Osiris are brothers, Erik had a twin brother.
  • Set was made to submit to Horus, who is a falcon headed god, Erik worked for Falcon Studios.
He worked hard for the money, and let's remember who's money it really is:

Set is another name for Eros, or subconscious erotic desire, among other things we'd rather not deal with. When Isis is revealed, what we see is our own true self - our naked subconscious reflected back to us. Isis is a drag queen.

It's funny how gosporn has come full circle. When I began, my personal "mission statement" was that people needed to get in touch with - and make peace with - their inner Eros, I didn't know why, but it was "important". And it was a religious thing. We need to understand the religious myth around all of this... At first I thought it was a Christian issue, and now it goes all the way back to Egypt: this religion of de Nile.

That was in 2006. Now, we see the Pope calling homosexuality "insidious and dangerous" (he should know). We also see lunatic fundamentalists demanding to put gays in concentration camps, ironically gay prison is an enduring homoerotic fantasy.

Bradley Manning (homo=man)

Set/Eros is coming back. He's the angry Erik, Isis unveiled, the pissed-off homo, the lonely gay in solitary confinement, too fucking dangerous, we'd rather forget about him than deal with him.

I know a lot of people think that the repeal of DADT and gay marriage are signs that Set is being accepted, but this is merely another clever religious attempt to control a rather uncontrollable nature. Set dies when that ring of monogamy goes on.

Thing is, Set isn't all that smart. He's a personification of a part of the brain that almost shuts down cognitive ability - erotic desire. Horus has been outsmarting him for a long time. But what Set lacks in smarts - he makes up for in persistence.

This brave new Aeon of Horus, an alchemical wedding of global proportions, the pinnacle of Olympus reached, man become god, is officially being inaugurated with the London Olympics and some kind of stargate opening ritual that we can only guess at, but there is one big problem - Set is not on the guest list.

"I distinctly remember, Addison, crossing you off my guest list. What are you doing here?"

Dead or Alive?
I'm pretty sure we can expect Set to crash the party. Remember what happened the last time they got the stargate spinning up? Gate Crashers.

The Homecoming

Super moon last, I was chatting with my friend Joe, who is currently in Boise but soon going back home to Utah. He's going back to be with the Latter Day Saints. Not literally, but perhaps figuratively. Same day, I get some spam email from "Utahhomes".

I've long thought of gays as the true latter day saints, I'm not alone. At least we share one trait with the boys from Utah - a disdain for monogamy.

It's weird but I just don't think we're from here. John Waters was relating his memory of seeing The Wizard of Oz for the first time and he said he was the only kid in the theater who was NOT tapping his heels together three times! And he's right, Oz is our home, and Kansas is some horrible, drab place where we've somehow, accidentally(?), been born, and we can't wait to get the hell out as soon as possible.

Obama officially declared "War on Marriage" today:
"I have to tell you that over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together, when I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that Don't Ask Don't Tell is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married,” ~Barrack Obama
So faggots are cool in Kansas as long as we're helping to raise the next generation of soldiers, or we enlist as soldiers "on my behalf", thus keeping Kansas safe for "democracy", or if we would please just stop fucking like rabbits.

Sigh... is it any wonder I want out? I just want to go back home. Sometimes I wonder if the "antichrist" is simply the mayor of Kansas, trying to make us all feel "at home".

I have a concept for a short story about an event that is popularly called "The Rapture". I was thinking of Oz as not being some incredibly distant place, but rather, another dimension that co-exists in our 3D space. It's very real and very close, but we can't see it, not in our normal "Kansas" mind set.

I was imagining that as these two dimensions, Kansas and Oz, move closer and closer, that there would become a time/place co-ordinate when it would be possible to leap from one to the other. These two dimensions, being equal and opposite polarities, would create a sort of magnetic field between them as they approached, and this would enable a sort of transference, or "bridge" if you will, between realms.

"Jack be nimble, Jack be quick, Jack jump over the candle stick."

Imagine if you could jump to Oz - you'd instantly vanish in Kansas, and suddenly appear in another dimension! Those in Kansas would wonder, and perhaps say that you'd been raptured, or abducted by tornado. You'd arrive in Oz, but at the same time, if you were quick, you'd see that a great many residents of Oz were lined up to take the trip back to Kansas. And honestly, you might be relieved that they were leaving.

In my short story, this "leap" would naturally occur while asleep, when the gateway between these dimensions is already thin.
But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him. ~Matthew 24:23-2

I Heart the Monster (revised)

I posted an article about the Toxic Avenger a few days ago, but I withdrew it because I realized it was like, synchro raving! So here's a second attempt, with more right brain respect.

I finally watched The Toxic Avenger, "the first super hero from New Jersey!" A 1985 dud that became a midnight movie cult hit. The movie struck me because of it's themes of good and evil and our perceptions of it. The criminals are physically gorgeous, while the hero is a deformed monster, and the only one who sees the hero as a HERO, is a blind woman (and total babe). It's a fabulous morality play, and I enjoyed it immensely.

Plot: Melvin Ferd is a stereotypical 98-pound weakling dork. He works as a janitor at a health club in the town of Tromaville, which is the "Toxic Waste Capitol" of the nation. The corrupt (and corpulent) Mayor Belgoody is also head of the local crime syndicate, which probably describes most towns a little too well.

Melvin is constantly harassed by the health club patrons, His mere EXISTENCE being an affront. The pranks grow meaner and more violent until he's tricked/seduced into wearing a pink tutu and kissing a sheep, with the entire club witnessing his humiliation and emasculation. A ritual castration? He is then chased around the health club by the mob where he eventually leaps from a second story window - landing in a drum of toxic waste. He THEN spontaneously combusts and runs down the street screaming!? And that's the last the wicked clubbers see of Melvin, or so they think.

Unfortunately for them, Melvin is transformed into a hideously deformed creature of superhuman size and strength, who has a single-minded desire to "clean up" Tromaville (trauma town?). He is much like the Hulk, a creature who descends/ascends into a state of unstoppable rage when confronted with injustice. The 'Berserker'. I believe he represents the Id:

"But the Krell forgot one thing - Monsters John! Monsters from the id!" --Forbidden Planet

Much like the Batman, 'Toxie' has taken on the form of the villain's worst nightmare, which he literally IS - the concretization of their subconscious guilt. The criminal elite of Tromaville have grown fat off poisoning the town, and it's brilliant that the vehicle of their destruction is born from the FRUIT of their OWN wickedness. Karma Smackdown!

The innocent are frightened by Toxie at first, but they soon realize they have nothing to fear from the hideous creature. It only attacks "bad people", as a scientist empirically demonstrates. Toxie (like Santa) "knows" who has been bad or good, because he is the subconscious Id, the Mind that lives within ALL minds. The Monster knows where ALL the bodies are buried.

By the end of the movie, the townspeople realize that the hideous monster is their true Savior, and they come to his rescue at the big stand-off, creating a human shield of protection around him, wearing "I heart the Monster" t-shirts. It was so dorky and so cute and so FIERCE - I may have shed a tear.

The film is notable for it's homophobic attitude - many of the real monsters are outrageous gay stereotypes - and it reminds me how far we've come since 1985. Varen and I are a legal couple now, with (most) of the same rights as straight people. The Gay Monster has been civilized, and that's honestly something I could never have imagined back when I came out in 1982.

In the 'Life Imitates Art' category, I blogged over a year ago (see The Good Shepherd) about a school in Nova Scotia who's student body (thanks to the inspired organizing of two boys) donned pink t-shirts in solidarity with a boy who was bullied and called a faggot because he wore a pink shirt to school. They formed a human shield, and they did it by wearing the equivalent of an 'I Heart the Faggot' t-shirt.

As I'm writing this, the Palestinians are undergoing another bashing from the Israelis, this one worst than the last, but better than the next. Bullies ALWAYS escalate the torment. I'm thinking, ya know, the only reason gay people have a legal RIGHT to the Pursuit of Happiness is because enough straight people somehow saw themselves in this struggle, and even though Prop 8 succeeded in California, honestly, I think that's just a blip - the trend is gay friendly.

Gay people have reached, if not THE Promised Land, at least a meaningful plateau. A place to spread our tents. And I feel like it's time to return the favor. Gay Porn for Palestine? Gay Band-Aid? I heart Palestine!

NOTES:

My most memorable personal episode of gay bashing was actually one of total victory. I had just come out and my hot new boyfriend and I were making out on the hood of my car late one summer night in the parking lot of of a notorious gay bar, and some guy started harassing us because we were doing that. So we stood up, and he quickly realized that he'd chosen to pick on guys bigger and stronger than he was. We fucking CHASED him around the parking lot, cornered him, and told him what a JERK he was to his face, and he had to take it. Beaten by FAGGOTS!!

The Moses Channel

I finally watched 'Soulmaid' last week:

Moses' chronic seizures take the form of religious visions, a goddess named Glintentica. But when Moses meets David, the vengeful goddess attempts to come between the two, possess David's soul, and bring about the extinction of gays forever. Can a way to defeat Glinny's evil scheme be found? 2007.

Soulmaid Trailer

OK, I hated it... at first. mainly because it was trampling over ground that I had sort of personally peed on, and I didn't like the trespassing. That said, it's clear that I'm not the only homo with apocalyptic dreams. Those pinko beams of VALIS are definitely getting around. Like a funky bad dream, I couldn't get it out of my head.

Manhattan Moses is employed as a "Male maid". He cleans your apartment in nothing but his tighty whities - while you watch. Some kind of kinky NYC cottage industry. Moses is always cleaning, cleaning... sponges, sponges. I'm deliberately avoiding Sponge Bob Square Pants synchs for now, because I fear Bob is a ravenous synch hole of epic proportions, and my time is short.

So anyhoo, the very next day my honey asked me to clean the kitchen floor, which I admit was several weeks past due. So I'm on the floor, sponge in hand, and I'm thinking, this is SO weird, I'm acting out "Moses". I scrub and I scrub, all the way around the kitchen and the breakfast nook, and I'm especially diligent, because this is like MOSES doing the cleaning.

I get everything spotless, except there's the round table in the breakfast nook, and I decide to clean underneath it. The table has a cruciform base, and when I slide it away, I see the major CROSS shaped stain beneath, tinged with RED from God only knows what. OK, a filthy RED CROSS on the floor of my pristine breakfast nook! No match for the SPONGE of MOSES!!!

The Bloody Cross is the sign of the Templars, and in my synchropinion, a fabulous candidate for the infamous Mark of the Beast. It flashed on me: Holy Fuck! Is THAT what we're supposed to do? Make the RED cross WHITE? How is THAT supposed to happen?

I have some funky Moses synchs, Burning Bush and all. The strangest one was last summer, when a Jehovah's Witness lady came to the door, evangelizing. As usual, I told her that I was a Christian and that I was QUEER, and she was completely unperturbed by that news. She got out her bible in her best 'Church Lady' way and it plops open to Numbers 20:9-12 which is the tale of why Moses never made it across the River Jordan to the Promised Land. She reads the verse, tells me in no uncertain terms the moral of the story, and then she turns on her heels and leaves, and I had the feeling that verse was the WHOLE REASON she came to my door.

I was like, WTF?!!

The opposite of the Templar cross is a white cross in a red field, which synchs up with the sacrificial Red Shirts. It is the sign of the LIFEGUARD - the GUARDIAN of the beach - the eternally bronze sex symbol. The first gay porn I ever bought featured a lifeguard. And then there's BAYWATCH.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Baywatch is the most watched TV show in the world of all time, with over 1.1 billion viewers. That pesky 11 again.

David Hasselhoff was never my cup of tea, but I sure envied his job. He was King of the Beach, and he hired only the hottest of the Hottentots.

Before Baywatch, David was Michael KNIGHT:

Michael Knight, a former police detective... is recruited into the secret organization FLAG (Foundation for Law And Government) after nearly being killed during a botched investigation. Knight is provided with the use of KITT, an ultra sophisticated autonomic car which enables him to travel across the United States fighting crime.

Alrighty then. Michael (the angel/archetype) drives around the New World (Atlantis) in a self-aware chariot/grail (human being) that is voiced by William Daniels, who plays the car/grail like a flaming QUEEN!

The reverse Templar cross also happens to be the Swiss FLAG - an odd little country. Land of chalets, Toblerone, cuckoo clocks and Swatches, fondue, secreted wealth, the Matterhorn and the infamous CERN in Geneva. Most importantly, it was the HAVEN to which Julie Andrews FLED from the Nazis in The Sound of Music!

One wonders what kind of secret leverage the Swiss have held all these years that prevented them from being absorbed into this or that European empire.

The Swiss GUARD are the ceremonial protectors of St. Peter's - AKA GUARDIANS of the Key Bearer. I doubt if the Vatican has anything besides money and reputation left to guard, but the symbolic point is made.

Swiss Guards is the name that has been given to Swiss mercenary soldiers who have served as bodyguards, ceremonial guards, and palace guards at foreign European courts from the late 15th century until the present day. --wikipedia

Dig those funky silks. Strangely, those were the colors I chose for the sail of my second little yacht - a SOL cat.

A boy and his solar powered Grail, at rest.

Anyway, back to Moses. Moses didn't make it across the River Jordan on the first go, because he didn't give God the credit for his acts. A copyright infringement. Maybe he'll make it across the second time around, as long as he gives due credit:

"By the power of the Great Phallic Sky God!"

That should play well in Peoria!

The Stuff of Heroes

Last year I rented Surge of Power - a very low-budget gay pic that I stumbled upon while browsing aimlessly on purpose at Blockbuster Video. It's a campy little movie that parodies comic book super heroes written, produced and starring Vincent J. Roth. It's not particularly good (most would say awful) but it pegged my archetype reader meter, and looking back now, even more so.

The main character is a gay man who loves comic books - he and his friends are all 'graphic novel' geeks, and we even get a little soap box speech from one of them defending the genre. A freak lab accident gives our hero super powers, but its not the plot that is so interesting to me, it's the details...

Out of the Blue (cool logo)

Surge's "battle suit" is all sky blue, and at the time I thought the suit was kinda bland for a gay super hero - I would have expected flaming gold lamé and rhinestones. But considering the flurry of blue posts in the blogosphere, especially Adam's encyclopedic documentation at Inside the Cosmic Cube, maybe the costume fits.

Surge's power is a build up of energy that is suddenly released. Ahem. He sprays white, sticky goo on the bad guys - which immobilizes them. I've read enough about "tantric sex magick" to suspect that an orgasm, properly channeled, really IS the ultimate power in the universe.

At one point, our hero is seen wearing a red star necklace, and a shirt with the number 66 displayed. Executive Order 66 is the command given by the Sith (Seth?) emperor to destroy the Jedi Knights/Knights Templar in Star Wars III.

Both hero and villain's power comes from the same source, the very same lab accident. Hmmm.

Both villain and hero have the same weakness: dance music. It renders them powerless! OK, lets consider how many movies where I've seen a sexy dance scene totally hypnotize the king/merchant/crime lord/hero/villain? Why IS the go-go dancer the god of any hot gay review?

The hero gets a phone call from his dad, who asks how "the fruit of my loins" is doing, hehe. Errr... fruits, first fruits?

My Hero (on the right)

Perhaps the most amazing thing to me is that the hero "talks" to Jesus. He has a little Jesus statue in his bedroom, and he chats to it like it can hear him. This blue fag super hero who shoots orgasm loads at bad guys has a "personal" Jesus, and it's presented without even a hint of sly mocking. I think I fucking cried.

NOTES:

The Jesus statue has a red cape, not the traditional blue. Amanita or Psilocybin, what's your poison?

Blogger spell check suggested "honeylocust" for "Psylocyben"(sic). I just can't get away from the bee thing this week.

The movie features cameos by Lou Ferrigno (the Incredible Hulk and queer muscle icon) and Nichelle Nicholes (Star Trek's Lieutenant Uruha. According to her bio, she sang at the 'Blue Angels Club' in New York)

My dad's high school mascot was the 'Blue Devil'. Wouldn't ya know.

The Passion

It looks like Jesus is finally out of the closet now... way out.

From Queerty:

Matthias Von Fistenberg’s Passio will surely make a few Fox News anchors explode - and not in a good way. In fact, it is safe to say that even those non-acolytes of the “fair and balanced” network will be disturbed by von Fistenberg’s Jesus. This savior could care less about clothing the naked or feeding the hungry, unless the meal’s cock.

And I Danced My Life Away...

Time for another gay movie review. Trick is the story of Gabriel Bloom (Christian Campbell), an aspiring musical theatre (dying art form) writer in NYC (also dying). One night, he falls in lust with Mark (John Paul Pitoc), a go-go boy at a local bar. Later, while going home alone (again) on the subway, he happens into him, and a one night stand is in the making. But as the night unfolds, friends, family and roommates all trump a "cheap" gay one night stand, and it makes for an interesting morality tale of how one by one, each trump card is proven to have no real value, while the horny gay lovers wind up holding the best hand - though finally they have to declare it... even demand it.

Tori Spelling is the "diva" (every gay movie seems to require a diva of at least tangential fame) who plays the insecure, self-obsessed NYC actor to a T.

Shot just before 9/11, the the twin towers frequently brood in the background, shining bronze in the gritty sunset, ominous sentinels... but only in hindsight.

What got my eso-homoerotic (Thanks Filmnoir23) "spidy-sense" tingling were a few little things:

Gabriel's friend Perry sings at an off Broadway piano bar. The song he chooses to sing is "Como te gusta mi pinga?" which is a fabulous (and profound) comment on genital shame (my BIG issue). Perry sings the song in a sort of mincing, campy way, but when he sings the name "Montalbán", he belts it out like King Kong.

Ricardo Montalbán is the proprietor of Fantasy Island, and even more so: Kahn - the genetically enhanced, pec-implanted nemesis of El Capitan Kirk in Star Trek II. Thing is, I love big pecs - I can be hypnotized by a bodybuilder dancing his pecs. In a way, Kahn is another example of the fear/parody of overt masculine sexiness. Between the Borg, Kahn, and the Jem Hadar (addicted to "white") there's something up. I wonder, in the Star Trek universe, on what team I'd play?

NOTES

What's unusual to me about this movie is that I've personally played a few of the parts. I've stood entranced at the beauty of a go-go boy. I've been to a gay piano bar off Broadway (the "narrow way"?) I've asked an older friend to use his apartment for a one night stand, which at the time was, I assure you, the single most important event on earth.

Monte Albán is a pre-Columbian archeological site in Oaxaca, which I happened to visit back in the day. My strongest memory of the visit was standing with a group of tourists while listening to the guide, and one of the tourists announced, in her best 'church lady' voice, "Hmhm! THEY knew the meaning of the cross!" At which my PK travel companion rolled his eyes and murmured under his breath: "Mormons!" I was like, WTF?

Jun 21, 2007

Latter Days

I rented 'Latter Days' this week, yet another gay movie that shows the church in all it's hypocritical glory, and at the same time makes you believe in God, or at least, makes you WANT to believe.

Aaron (Steve Sandvoss); a young, hunky and virginal Mormon missionary meets Christian (Wesley A. Ramsey); a gay, anything but virginal, LA party boy. Their passionate romance leads to Aaron's excommunication, and to Christian's "dark night of the soul". When the affair (actually just a kiss) is discovered, Aaron heads back home to Pocatello, Idaho, and a grim welcome from his Mormon family. After being told that the loving God he truly believes in will never forgive him for being what he is, he attempts suicide via a razor blade, and failing that, is sent to a church approved psycho ward that, among other things, practices electro-shock aversion therapy/torture on his nuts!

This part of the movie is true to life - many gay men have been literally tortured by loving family, hoping to save them from a fate worse than torture - hell. The fear of hell is one of Satan's greatest weapons, and though karmic law/justice/logic demands it exists, I also think that hell is a place being built right here on earth, and men, not demons, are its gatekeepers. As a Christian Universalist, I accept the doctrine of Apokatastasis (the "restoration of all things"), and that loving mercy really does trump justice. Hell 'eternal' is a myth.

Back to the plot: thanks to a remarkable serendipity that writer/director C. Jay Cox makes abundantly clear could only have happened at the direction of a "higher power", Aaron and Christian (Jew and Gentile?) are reunited, and a tragedy is miraculously turned into a happy ending. The movie also features Jacqueline Bisset in a wonderful role, and like, how cool is that?

Why are fags able to write better Christian movies than Christians?

NOTES:

Tentmaker is a Christian Universalist site that gives a good overview of the whole idea. The site is named after Paul, the world's greatest missionary who never married, preferred the company of men, and openly thanked GOD that he had NO desire for women... *innocent shrug*. The reason it's called "Tentmaker" is because Paul literally made tents to support himself when between preaching gigs, and yea, the doctrine of universal forgiveness is like a "tent" that covers everyone, duh. It totally cracks me up that hard-ons are said to "tent" our pants - they're also "tentmakers".

The Gay Bomb

From the 'truth is stranger than fiction' department, comes this tidbit via QueerMeNow.

Dark Alley Media prepares to drop the Gay Bomb

...Gay Bomb will take us into the future and the year 2012. George the Second has refused to step down as leader of the “free world,” and the nations of Europe have banded together to fight the new American military dictatorship. Desperate to fend off its attackers, the US launches the experimental “gay bomb,” designed to make the enemy forces drop their guns and turn fag. But the winds of fate blow in a different direction, and soon America is brought to its knees.

Recent news headlines revealed that Pentagon insiders admitted to having truly considered the “gay bomb” as an example of non-lethal chemical warfare in the Iraq War. The Air Force asked for a $7.5 million grant to develop the idea, which was proposed to the government’s highest scientific authority.

Dark Alley’s Matthias von Fistenberg said, “We’re really not making this up. In fact, if the Pentagon officials wants to see the outcome of this project, they should tune into Dark Alley TV on December 1...

They really AREN'T making it up.

Adam and Steve

Adam and Steve is one of a growing body of films written by gay men that obliquely and cleverly discuss both religion and queerness, without marginalizing either. Written, directed and starring Craig Chester (Adam) it also stars Malcomb Gets as Steve, and Parker Posey (who I love ever since 'Best in Show').

The film begins with a scene (a one night stand from hell) that echos the "Fall" - and results in a condition of guilt, shame and fear. A great deal of the movie's appeal is about the overcoming of this condition. Along the way we get cute romantic comedy and a sexy gay country/western dance scene - but at it's heart, it's a bible lesson.

Adam and Steve are archetypes of struggle and triumph. They represent all gay men, on the front lines of the struggle against fear and shame.

And then, the intriguing story line of Adam's family. Adam Bernstein is Jewish, and his family suffers under a curse - the Bernstein Curse. Bad shit follows them like a dark cloud - his dad's in a wheelchair, his mom has a broken neck, his sister - oy, don't ask. They suffer under the curse, and yet, when Steve asks them about it - how can they live with it?... Adam's father gives the most graceful and wisest answer I can imagine. And when Adam and Steve are finally married - when guilt, shame and fear are overcome in a holy marriage, then Adam's father leaps out of his wheelchair in joy, the curse of Bernstein overcome.

If Adam's family is an archetype of all Jews, then all Jews are an archetype of the whole human race, and Adam, the second Adam - is an archetype of the overcomer - the redeemer.

So it is written: "The first man Adam became a living being" ; the last Adam, a life-giving spirit. --1 Corinthians 15:45

V and I rented 'Gay Sex in the 70s' from Blockbuster last night - about the dawning of gay liberation in NYC. It's an amazing movie. It interviews some "survivors" of the period, who describe the freedom of the scene back then, the piers, the trucks, the clubs, the back rooms, the parties, the FREE love as only gay men can give it. When these guys, all in their 50's and 60's now, describe their youth, it's overlaid with a profound melancholy (thanks to AIDS) - and at the same time, a secret joy, like they were reliving a wonderful dream. None of the men interviewed renounced their activities, or "recanted". It was like they were living in a magical moment, and they knew it, and treasured it, even WITH all the suffering that followed.

I came out in 1981 - the dawning of the AIDS crisis. I remember furtively reading the 'Advocate' in the school library, and the first press given to the growing "gay cancer". The shadow of death has always haunted my sex life. My life.

The movie interviewed a few modern young gay men - this stood out:
"I can't even smoke a cigarette in a bar, let alone have sex in a park".

Art: St. Mark's Baths poster by Boris Vallejo. Coincidentally, The Secret Gospel of Mark, yep, St. Mark, allegedly included a story about Jesus having gay sex.
